I think I am not making paintings, just to make paintings. I am trying to create a feeling, a mood, an athmospere. Not just any jug or pot will do, not just any piece of landscape will do. I will have to see the -mostly old- objects myself and hold it will it give me that particular feeling. I like to stroll around these second-hand stores.
I must walk through that particular landscape will it get me in a certain mood, especially early in the morning, when there is no one around.

And, I think that in this hectic day and age, there is a need for a moment of rest. I hope that my paintings can be a part of that.

I was born and raised in Leeuwarden (Holland) and started my career as a graphic art designer. But I always knew and felt that drawing and painting was the job to be. Inspired by Rembrandt, I read books about Rembrandt when I was a kid, and later influenced by Maris, Israels and Breitner I really started painting in 2006.

I started to experiment with all kinds of mediums and felt that oil was the best medium to express myself. What I like in a painting is the game between light and shadows. That is an important aspect in my work. To create a balance between light and dark in order to get a certain atmosphere. This sometimes leads to commissions.

At the moment I find myself painting more with soft edges. I discovered that soft edges emphasizes the mood I am looking for in a painting. But it is not an easy job to do. I think that 50% of my paintings end up in a new layer or gesso, but it might be more. That is, often, frustrating. Knowing what I want, but not being able of putting the idea on canvas or board. I can paint a vase or a farm with some trees, but that is not what I want. Once I painted a copper kettle. Just that. On a piece of mdf. The kettle was good, I mean really good. The colors, highlights and shadows were right. But the painting itself was boring. For me, this is not good enough. Sometimes the painting comes close to what I had in mind.

Up till now I sell my work through Ebay, online galleries and my website. Recently I had the chance of showing my work at Brandon Michael Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
